May 3, 2024 — May marks the beginning of Water Safety Month; a campaign to raise awareness and educate people on how to prevent drowning and enjoy water activities safely.
Why Is Water Safety Month So Important?
According to studies conducted by the CDC, drowning remains a significant threat, with more children aged 1-4 succumbing to drowning than any other cause of death, and it ranks as the second leading cause of unintentional injury death among children aged 5-14.
People assume that drowning only happens to children and only happens in deep water. Here’s the truth about drowning: drowning can happen to anyone, at any time. Drowning is silent, happens in seconds, and may not look like what you see on TV.
Lifeguards at the Big Kahuna’s Water Parks in Destin, Florida and West Berlin, New Jersey regularly go through safety training.
Getting Ready to Splash into Summer Fun - with a focus on SAFETY!
At Big Kahuna’s, we are lucky enough to have a strong team of lifeguards, first aid team members, and other aquatics professionals, but the risk of drowning emergencies remains present. Our park staff and lifeguards focus on implementing key preventative measures such as proper lifejacket use, fencing and barriers around pool edges, safe slide dispatch, avoiding underwater breath holding games, and ensuring children are under constant supervision are paramount in preventing drowning emergencies.
Events like the World’s Largest Swimming Lesson (WLSL) provide valuable opportunities to educate people of all ages about water safety. Scheduled for June 20th, 2024, this global event offers engaging sessions aimed at spreading awareness and teaching life-saving skills. Both Big Kahuna’s locations are proud to participate in this event annually.
